So, I wrote a thesis for you guys about the dangers of the Pokémon world when applied to practical life. However, my phone glitched and all of my thesis was lost. To make up for that error, here are some ideas for writing.
1. Spelling and grammar are your best tools! You wouldn't not use your best tools, would you? Use them right! Don't write like you would text (unless your texts aren't full of abbreviations and bad capitalization and punctuation). Instead, write properly. Try not to spell bad.
2. Your hero must have flaws. In other words, your hero can't be a Mary Sue or Gary Stu. They must have reasonable flaws and not too many powers. For example, saying you can manipulate reality is Mary Sue-ish. Not being able to die is the same. Make sure they have flaws like greed or vanity. Take the Mary Sue test for more info.
3. Your world must be convincing. If you're not writing fanfiction, then you're probably going to have to make up some things. Your world needs history, religions, species, a currency and so much more! The sky is the limit. Wanna remark about the population? Go ahead, it's your story.
4. Your villain must be dark some how. They are not always evil, but villains need to have some sort of darkness and motivation. What makes your villain tick? What can they do to ruin the hero's day? What crimes do they commit? You decide!
5. Make sure there are rules if there is magic or a similar force. Physics have laws, why not magic? It can't solve everything like Harry Potter reveals. What is magic capable of? What isn't it capable of?
6. If you don't want magic, try reality on for size. Make sure everything is consistent with the time period. 2014 clothing in 1482 isn't realistic at all! Every character needs to be suited to their time period (unless special circumstances like time travel prevent that).
7. If the story is in the future, research. Making accurate guesses to the future of the world requires research. Research no matter what story it is!
8. Consider the genre. What do you expect out of a genre? Romance needs romantic things, right? You wouldn't change a mystery a romance, would you? Then, write in that manner!
9. History is good to learn from. Having history impact society can be crucial. Consider that history impacts the world all the time. Make sure your story has the same implications.
Now, go write! Put your tips in the comments below!
